As part of my school’s Values in Action (VIA) initiative, I had the meaningful opportunity to volunteer at Jamiyah Food Bank, a non-profit organisation that supports vulnerable communities in Singapore by providing them with essential food supplies. This experience was an important part of my secondary school journey, and it deeply shaped my understanding of community service, empathy, and social awareness.
Together with my classmates, we spent a day engaging in various activities that supported the food bank’s operations. Our tasks were hands-on and physically demanding, but also incredibly rewarding. We started by packing large sacks of rice into smaller, family-sized portions. This work required care, precision, and teamwork to ensure every bag was cleanly packed, correctly weighed, and sealed for distribution. Each portion packed reminded me that behind every bag was a family who would benefit from something so basic, yet so essential.
Next, we helped clean and organise the food bank’s storage areas. This included sweeping, wiping down surfaces, and sorting through donated items. We categorised the food by type and checked expiry dates to ensure that only safe, usable goods would be given out. Though this work was behind the scenes, it was crucial in ensuring that the food bank remained efficient and hygienic, and it taught me the importance of supporting systems that operate quietly in the background to keep society functioning.
What made the experience truly impactful was the chance to learn more about the lives of the less fortunate in Singapore. Despite Singapore’s image as a modern and developed country, the staff at Jamiyah reminded us that there are still many individuals and families who struggle with food insecurity. Hearing about their stories and the increasing demand for food aid made me reflect on how often we take things for granted — simple things like three meals a day, clean water, and a roof over our heads.
This experience helped me grow not just as a student, but as a person. It taught me the value of compassion, responsibility, and taking action rather than staying passive. I saw how important it is to give back to society and how small contributions — when done with sincerity — can have a big impact on others. Volunteering at the Jamiyah Food Bank reminded me that we all have a role to play in building a more caring and inclusive society, no matter our age or background.
Looking back, this VIA project was one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had in secondary school. It strengthened my character, reinforced my values, and motivated me to continue contributing to the community in the future.
